Why would an adolescent need to see a gynecologist?
Puberty brings many changes to young women and their bodies. JoEllen Embry WHNP and Barbara Lockwood WHNP help young women to understand these changes and how to care for themselves, as well as providing treatment for any conditions and advice on sexual health. Teenage girls are recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to begin seeing a gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 15. While pap tests are not usually required until a woman is 21 years old, if a teenager is sexually active, has irregular periods, or symptoms consistent with pelvic inflammatory disease or sexually transmitted diseases she should definitely see a gynecologist for a thorough examination.
What are common gynecological concerns for teenagers?
Due to the hormonal fluctuations of puberty, young women often experience irregular periods. Irregular periods include early or delayed first menstruation, heavy or frequent periods, significant pain during menstruation, or amenorrhea, which is the absence of periods. Breast masses are also common as a young woman develops. Even if a young woman is not sexually active, it is important for her to build a relationship with a trusted gynecologist.
What should a young woman expect to talk about during her first gynecologist appointment?
JoEllen Embry WHNP wants her young patients to enjoy good health while feeling comfortable and confident in their bodies. She will answer questions and provide advice on a number of topics including periods, cramps and PMS. She can provide advice on sexual health ranging from birth control to sexually transmitted diseases. The doctor will also answer question about any other health related issues like acne, weight management, and the emotional and physical changes that puberty brings.

I still love this place. It’s my second year as a patient here, and they still treat me so well. Every concern that I had was taken seriously and my doctor gave me some things to help with a couple of them. The office also isn’t really cold (which I’ve found to be a problem at some offices) so you won’t be freezing during your exam. She’s definitely the best doctor I have been to and recommend to every woman to look into coming here. Also, all of your test results are available online through a patient portal, and you can also schedule new appointments and fill out all of your patient information forms ahead of time on there. This makes checking in for your appointment super quick and easy.

This was my first visit at this office and it was so much better then a visit I’ve had at a different gynecologist. The ladies were genuinely friendly and helpful and all very knowledgeable. They make you feel comfortable and safe. It’s so hard to find a gynecologist that fits your needs and I’m very happy to say I found mine.
